Some 200 musicians have taken up their positions along a 2.5 kilometer stretch of rail line between Weimar and Jena in eastern Germany. This might well be the world’s longest orchestra pit. The musicians are performing Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” from his Symphony No. 9. Train passengers can tune in and enjoy beautiful music on retro radios provided at the Jena and Weimar train stations. They just have to set the dials to the right frequency and they’re good to go.
