In 1932, in the princely state of Dhenkanal, Raja Shankar Pratap Singhdeo assigned his brother Nrusingh Prasad Singhdeo as the prime minister and traveled to England. During his absence, the cruel regent Patayat constructed a palace on a 300-foot hill in Kankadpal Mauja, dedicated to his wife Yatna Kumari. The construction was brutal, with innocent laborers forced to work under threat, using elephants and oxen to carry heavy stones, water, and timber uphill. Today, the ruins of this palace stand as mute witnesses to the pain and oppression of that era.
