Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara, Africa’s last colony, remains one of the world’s most pressing and unresolved questions of decolonization and international law. This Global Monitoring Center international virtual conference examines how the illegal exploitation of Western Sahara’s natural resources — including phosphates, fisheries, and renewable energy projects — continues to sustain the occupation and undermine the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. Through legal, academic, and civil society perspectives, the discussion explores the moral, environmental, and geopolitical consequences of this ongoing injustice.

Panelists:

Dr. Isabel Lourenço – PhD Researcher, University of Coimbra, University of Porto; expert on decolonization, sovereignty, and human rights in Western Sahara.

Mr. Cord Beumer – Political Science Researcher, Goethe University Frankfurt; specializes in peace, conflict, and “green colonialism.”

Ms. Yagouta Mulay – Chairperson & Director, Sahrawi Observatory for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection (SONREP); leading Sahrawi civil society advocate for environmental justice and sovereignty.
