Good #WeatherWednesday, friends!🤗 Today’s viewer photo was sent to me from Ross Dunkerly from Indianapolis. It’s showcases a thunderstorm or cumulonimbus cloud⛈. Commonly called an anvil.
Thunderstorm clouds are referred to anvils because the cloud shape matches the shape of an anvil. Because of this similarity, it received that nickname☁️.
We can tell it’s a thunderstorm from the front of the anvil. A thunderstorm forms from this lifecycle:
Cumulus cloud ➡️ towering cumulus ➡️ cumulonimbus⚡️.
The top of an anvil is flat because that’s where the towering cumulus hits the stratosphere, the next layer of the atmosphere. We call it the tropopause, that’s the layer in between the troposphere and the stratosphere🌎. Isn’t that cool?!🤯
