9mm for Hunting? I Tested It Against 10mm — Here's the Data

Описание: Is 9mm enough to ethically hunt javelina? I put it to the test against .40 S&W and 10mm using real chronograph data and energy calculations.

I've been drawn for a HAM hunt (Handgun, Archery, Muzzleloader) here in Arizona, and I wanted to know: can I use one of my 9mm handguns, or do I need to step up to something bigger?

WHAT I TESTED:
9mm 115gr — Glock 34 & Springfield Kuna
.40 S&W 180gr — Springfield XD
10mm 180gr — Glock 20

THE RESULTS:
9mm: 404 ft-lbs at muzzle → 323 ft-lbs at 50 yards
.40 S&W: 419 ft-lbs at muzzle → 359 ft-lbs at 50 yards
10mm: 523 ft-lbs at muzzle → 448 ft-lbs at 50 yards

Using a coyote (100 ft-lbs) to whitetail (1,000 ft-lbs) scale, I calculated javelina needs roughly 350-356 ft-lbs for an ethical kill. The 9mm drops below that threshold at 50 yards. The 10mm stays well above it.

Winner: Glock 20 in 10mm is coming with me on this hunt.
