It is located in Satkhira district on the southwestern border of Bangladesh. Kaliganj Thana was established in 1942 by separating 12 unions, 243 mouzas and 249 villages from Satkhira district. After the publication of the gazette notification on 21 September of that year, the activities of Kaliganj Upazila were officially started from 1983. Kaliganj upazila is situated between 23 ° 29 'and 23 ° 42' north latitude and between 90 ° 59 'and 91 ৫ 05' longitude. Debhata Upazila to the north, Shyamnagar Upazila to the south, West Bengal of India to the west and Asashuni Upazila to the east. Kaliganj Upazila is a historical region with immense potential. Its topography is fertile. It is known that this upazila was named Kalibari in Narayanpur near the present Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex. Kalibari was named by the then dignitaries and top administrative figures as the Circle Office, Bazar Revenue Office, Sanitary Office etc. were established near it. Dewan Srihari (Vikramaditya), a close follower of the Mughal general Munim Khan, and Janaki Vallabh (Basant Roy), the revenue chief, arranged for Gaur's property to be hidden deep in the Sundarbans. They left Gaur with the wealth of Gaur and a part of the bodyguards and some people of the city and settled at Basantapur and Shitalpur and Mukundpur in the present Kaliganj upazila beside the South Jamuna and Ichhamati. The village of Basantapur was named after Basant Roy. In 1971, Kaliganj Upazila was under Sector 9. Kaliganj Thana / Upazila was liberated from Pakistani enemy on 20 November 1971.
