Aromaticity refers to a unique set of chemical properties that are characteristic of a particular class of organic compounds known as aromatic compounds or arenes. These compounds have a distinctive aroma and exhibit specific chemical behavior due to their cyclic arrangement of atoms and strong delocalized pi-electron bonds. The most famous example of an aromatic compound is benzene. Aromatic compounds are characterized by their strong and persistent aroma, high stability, and low reactivity towards electrophilic substitution. Aromaticity is defined using various criteria such as Hückel's rule, which states that the total number of pi electrons in an aromatic ring must be 4n + 2, where n is a non-negative integer.

An anti-aromatic compound is a type of molecule that exhibits behavior that is the opposite of what is observed in aromatic compounds. This means that, unlike aromatic compounds, anti-aromatic compounds have a low degree of stability and tend to react readily with other compounds. Anti-aromatic compounds often have a fully conjugated cyclic structure with an odd number of electrons and a planar or nearly planar geometry. As a result of their electron configuration, they are highly reactive and tend to undergo spontaneous transformations or react easily with other compounds, resulting in the loss of their aromaticity.
