The Concrete Scanner from Earth Science Systems is a 2 GHz ground penetrating radar system with unprecedented flexibility and ease of use. The scanner locates objects that are embedded in concrete such as rebar, conduits, post-tension cables, metal and plastic pipes, power lines, and utilities with precision and clarity. It can also measures concrete thickness and cover, and can find defects such as voids and honeycombing.
The system includes a scanner with integrated radar, odometer, a power line detector, and an optional tablet computer. An extension handle is available for scanning floors and hard to reach places. The Concrete Scanner’s cable-less design increases reliability and ease of use.
The system is modular so users can select only the components they need. The basic system can be used for marking out the location of subsurface objects before drilling or cutting. In this configuration a smart phone displays the results using an iOS or Android app. Adding a small tablet computer provides additional features for scanning and recording. For example, the system supports arbitrary scan lines where the scanner tracks its position — which makes surveying fast and eliminates the need for cumbersome scan mats.
A structural analysis based on the rebar depth, spacing, diameter, cover, and slab thickness can be made using the scan data. The system's software produces simple cross sections, depth slice images, and 3D images of the concrete structure. Users can produce detailed reports at the job site that include comprehensive 3D analysis and interactive reports that can be shared on the cloud.
