Se chanto (If it sings) (Occitan Valleys of Piedmont)
Se chanto (Valli Occitane del Piemonte)
From the concert "Il calendario dell’altra Italia" (The calendar of the other Italy) by the Italian Folk Ensemble - Adelaide, Australia 2015. Performance of traditional and popular songs of the Italian people.
The Italian Folk Ensemble (Adelaide) has been for the last 40 years, studying and performing traditional and popular songs of the Italian people, fully respecting their individual musical style and their cultural context. These songs cover a wide spectrum of emotions and experiences of the people of Italy through the ages, and as such, they are a unique medium to learn Italian culture and history.
In many Municipalities of the Occitan Valleys of Italy, a ceremony is held at the lowering of the Occitan flag on public buildings. A text that explains the reason for the observance is read in Occitan and Italian, then “Se Chanto” is sung. The same occurs when the flag is raised. In these valleys, “Se Chanto” is considered the Occitan anthem.
perque posque veire mes amours ount soun
In front of my window there's a bird,
it sings all night, singing its song.
If it sings, let it sing, it is not singing for me,
it is singing for my friend, who is far from me.
Those mountains are so high
they prevent me from seeing where my love(s) are.
If it sings, let it sing, it is not singing for me,
it is singing for my friend, who is far from me.
Mountains lower yourselves, plains rise,
so that I may see where my loves are.
If it sings, let it sing, it is not singing for me,
it is singing for my friend, who is far from me.
If it sings, let it sing, it is not singing for me,
it is singing for my friend, who is far from me. …
