The Australian’s Political Reporter Richard Ferguson says the leasing of the port of Darwin to China is a classic example of a "Chinese deal that might not exactly be in the national security interests of Australia".
His comments come as Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese on Sunday called on the Morrison government to look at the sale of the port of Darwin to a Chinese company, considering the recently proposed national security legislation.
On Thursday Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced new foreign policy legislation which will give him the power to knock back deals by state governments which threaten Australian sovereignty.
“Whenever Scott Morrison is asked about this, the prime minister is always saying he’s actually tightened foreign investment rules even more since he became prime minister and just before the last days of him being treasurer, so that basically something like the port of Darwin sale wouldn’t happen again,” Mr Ferguson told Sky News host Sharri Markson.
“You would think it is something that would definitely have to be reviewed.
“I don’t think there is a more classic example, except for maybe the Belt and Road deal with Victoria, of a Chinese deal that might not exactly be in the national security interests of Australia.”
