The Real Betty Boop: The Hidden Story of Baby Esther Jones
Long before Betty Boop became an animated icon, a young Black girl from Harlem was already wowing audiences with her adorable baby-voice singing, playful scat phrases, and magnetic stage presence. Her name was Esther “Baby Esther” Jones, a child star of the 1920s who performed at the Cotton Club and helped shape American pop culture — without ever being properly credited.
This video uncovers the true story behind the “Boop-oop-a-doop” sound, the 1932 lawsuit that revealed Baby Esther’s influence, and how her legacy was almost erased from history. Today, we honor the real woman behind one of the most recognizable voices in animation.
