On August 9, 1974, Richard Nixon became the first and only President of the United States to resign from office. His resignation was the dramatic conclusion to the Watergate scandal—a political crisis that began with a break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C., in June 1972.
The burglars were connected to Nixon’s re-election campaign and were caught attempting to install wiretaps and steal documents. What followed was a massive cover-up orchestrated by members of Nixon’s administration. Investigative journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein of The Washington Post helped expose the connection between the burglars and the White House.
As investigations unfolded, a Senate committee discovered that Nixon had a secret recording system in the Oval Office. The “smoking gun” tape revealed Nixon discussing efforts to obstruct the FBI’s investigation. Faced with mounting political pressure and the threat of impeachment, Nixon announced his resignation on national television, stating, “I have never been a quitter.”
The next day, Vice President Gerald Ford was sworn in as president. A month later, Ford issued a full pardon for Nixon, a move that sparked national controversy but, in his words, was intended to help the country heal.
