Account for the taper of your log so you cut parallel to the tree's growth rings. This minimizes cross-cutting your grain and minimizes the risk of warped boards after they dry. Also, to get the best looking grains, it is important to cut parallel to the center of the tree.
TIP: The easiest way to raise the narrow end of the log is to install toe boards on your mill.
