The most famous Rachmaninoff Prelude. Horowitz was rather unfortunate with this piece though; the only officially released recordings are the ones from 1931 and 1981. In the earlier one, there are several memory slips during the recording, however he had no choice but to just release it as the recording cost was tremendous at the time. The later one only refer to 2 performances in 1981 and not properly edited despite it being his favorite encore during 1980-1982 period.
So I remastered the unreleased live recording from 1948 and re-edited the 1981 one as well. He shows extremely powerful sound in the former one. The later one has less power, but still there are subtle control of the tone(that half-pedal at the beginning!) and beautiful middle part.
