In 1945, 33 SAS soldiers of A Troop 2 SAS began their withdrawal through hostile enemy territory back towards the Allied front line.
Operation Galia was a high-impact SAS mission in Tuscany lasting 6 weeks.The main objectives were to support the forthcoming Allied offensive by diverting Axis forces and disrupting their rear-area operations.
During the ex-filtration/evasion, enemy forces constantly pursued them over extremely difficult ground and in very harsh winter weather.
It showcased effective cooperation between Special Forces and local resistance and remains one of the most successful SAS operations in Italy.
