This interview features Mukhtiar Singh, a former Indian Army clerk who served during the 1971 Indo-Pak War.
During the conversation, Mukhtiar Singh explained that his primary duty during the 1971 war was to manage and safeguard official documentation at the backend. At the time, he was stationed in the Longewala sector, where administrative and logistical responsibilities were being handled. When hostilities began, he stated that the Indian Army responded decisively to Pakistani aggression and ultimately secured victory. According to him, only three soldiers from their unit were martyred during the engagement.
He also raised concerns regarding the portrayal of events in the Bollywood film Border (1997), directed by J.P. Dutta and starring Sunny Deol. Mukhtiar Singh claimed that the film inaccurately depicted certain incidents, including portraying a soldier as martyred who, in reality, was alive at the time.
Referring to the upcoming film Border 2, which has been the subject of public discussion, he expressed concern over reports suggesting that the movie shows Pakistani forces killing all Indian soldiers at Longewala. He asserted that such a depiction would be historically incorrect. According to historical records, the Battle of Longewala (December 4–5, 1971) involved a small contingent of Indian soldiers, led by Major Kuldeep Singh Chandpuri of the Punjab Regiment, who successfully defended their post against a much larger Pakistani armored force. The Indian Air Force played a crucial role in halting the advancing Pakistani tanks. The battle is widely recognized as a significant defensive victory for India during the war.
Mukhtiar Singh emphasized that while films often dramatize real events for cinematic impact, certain aspects of Border were exaggerated or inaccurately portrayed. He suggested that historical events, particularly those involving national defense and the sacrifices of soldiers, should be represented with greater accuracy and responsibility.
In addition, he expressed disappointment that many veterans who served the nation, including those who defended the country during wartime, did not receive the level of recognition and respect that had been promised by political leaders, including ministers and chief ministers.
Mukhtiar Singh shared his personal experiences and reflections during an interview conducted by Jagseer Singh Buckan, Editor of Auzar TV.
