The Gyrojet is a family of experimental rocket-propelled firearms developed in the 1960s by MBAssociates. Instead of firing conventional bullets, it launched small, spin-stabilized micro-rockets that accelerated after leaving the barrel, resulting in almost no recoil and a very lightweight weapon. The projectiles featured angled exhaust ports that induced rotation and provided stabilization rather than relying on rifling.
The design allowed the pistol and carbine versions to remain mechanically simple, since the ammunition carried most of the complexity. However, the system faced significant limitations, including inconsistent ignition, low initial velocity at the muzzle, and high production costs for the specialized rockets. Although it never entered widespread service, the Gyrojet remains one of the most distinctive and unconventional small-arms concepts of the Cold War era, noted for its futuristic appearance and unique ballistic principles.
