Observed in Ireland, Large-flowered Butterwort (Pinguicula grandiflora) is a truly remarkable plant. It grows in acidic peat bogs and acidic soils. It gains nutrition from both the digestion of insects that become trapped on their stick leaves as well as possibly digesting fallen plant matter by breaking down carbohydrates with an amylase-like enzyme, discovered to be also secreted by glands on the leaf.
