She was Zita of Bourbon-Parma, last Empress of Austria-Hungary.
After the empire fell, she fled with Emperor Karl and their children.
They left palaces behind and lived in borrowed houses and cold guest rooms.
In December, the children still waited for Christkindl and Christmas candles.
Zita had almost no jewels left and little money for presents.
She slipped small coins into walnuts and wrapped them like tiny treasures.
Fir branches became their tree, decorated with paper stars and bits of ribbon.
She taught the children old Austrian carols and prayers for a lost homeland.
Then Karl died on the island of Madeira, and Christmas grew even quieter.
Now she stood alone at the crib, a black-veiled widow with eight children.
Every year she read the Nativity story aloud, slowly and clearly.
There was more soup than meat on the table, but always enough to share.
Neighbours and simple friends were welcomed like visiting archdukes.
