Like most people, I’ve always known the iconic guitar intro, and I’ve even played it myself when I was learning guitar as a kid — but I had never actually heard the entire song from start to finish. Even crazier? I didn’t speak English back then, so this is my first time truly understanding the lyrics and the story behind the song.

As the song unfolds, I realize just how narrative-driven and cinematic it really is — from the references to Frank Zappa to the famous real-life events that inspired the lyrics. It’s such a strange and fascinating feeling to rediscover a song I knew so closely, yet never fully knew at all.
