VFI-2519 75 D Brushable Hard Coat is a 1A:3B, brush-on coating for small projects, foam adhesive, and repairs on existing damaged pieces in non-regulated environments. It cures in thin films to provide structure to EPS foam for theming designs and fabrication. After sanding and priming, the hard coat can be painted to blend in with existing applications or to improve the aesthetics of smaller pieces. No need for large, expensive spray equipment.
How to Use:
• Surface Prep
Surfaces should be clean and free of oils, dirt, debris, or other contaminants. Additional sanding prep or primer may be required, depending on the surface.
When using EPS foam, it must be aged for at least 30 days to allow any gas to escape from the manufacturing process.
When using wood, it must contain less than 11% moisture; otherwise, prime or mist-coat it with a light dusting first.
When using metal, the surface should be roughly sanded or sandblasted to SP6.
When repairing over existing hard coat, surfaces must be sanded and/or primed before application.
• Measuring & Mixing
Premix B side for 3 minutes in case settling has occurred.
Do not use full mix, especially for repairs and adhesive applications, to extend the pot life. Recommended in 200-gram batches for a 15-20-minute pot life.
The material has a 1A:3B mix ratio by volume and a 1A:3.44B by weight.
Mix ratio by weight is recommended with an accurate gram scale to prevent off-ratio errors.
Pour A into B and mix until uniform. Use the double-bucket mix method; scrape the sides and bottom of the container when mixing before transferring to a new container. Be aware of the pot life when working with the material.
• Application & Post Cure
Apply with a brush or trowel at a minimum rate of 60 mils, but 100 mils and greater will achieve the best film properties.
If subsequent coats are needed, apply within the 4-hour recoat window.
• Foam Adhesive Application
Use a non-shedding chip or foam brush for application. Apply to horizontal surfaces, when possible, to minimize coating sag.
Apply the coating to the edges of the pieces where you are adhering them.
Join the pieces and hold them together for a few seconds to ensure they stay in place as they cure.
More material can be mixed up and applied to the seam if blending is required.
• Repair Application
After mixing, wait a few minutes for the material to thicken before applying. This makes it easier to fill in holes or damaged areas.
Use a non-shedding chip or foam brush for application. Repairs will work better on horizontal surfaces, but leaving the material to thicken should make it less likely to sag.
A rubber scraper can be used to smooth out the coating and get rid of excess material.
• Cleanup
Tools and equipment used to apply VFI-6185 can be cleaned with xylene or MEK.
Applications: custom signs, prop making, themed environment design, hard coat repair, and other small projects
