This is my typical Smolt Streamer pattern with a twist; I added a single egg in front of the fly representing an egg feeding smolt. I’ve spent three months fishing the Skeena River and its tributaries for Steelhead and Salmon last summer and fall.
During that time, I observed schools of smolts and other baitfish feeding on free drifting eggs from spawning salmon. That gave me the idea to add a single egg to the fly using orange deer hair and trimming it circular to represent the egg.
The pattern worked well for Steelhead, Cutthroat and Bull Trout. I also added the single egg to sculpin and leech flies. For the hooks on this pattern, I used a short shank, wide gap, heavy wire hook like the Kamasan B-175 or its equivalent.
This is the first pattern on my new playlist “Skeena Steelhead Flies” which will include seven other egg feeding salmon and trout smolts, it will also include sculpins, leaches and different Spey flies.
