Madurodam was opened on 2 July 1952. Since day one, it has been more than a theme park that shows the best of the Netherlands: it was founded as a living memorial to the war hero George Maduro and as a way to raise funds for charities.

George John Lionel Maduro RMWO (15 July 1916 – 8 February 1945) was a Dutch law student who served as an officer in the 1940 Battle of the Netherlands and distinguished himself in repelling the German attack on The Hague. He was posthumously awarded the medal of Knight 4th-class of the Military Order of William, the highest and oldest military decoration in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. His heroic acts are included in the Canon of the Netherlands.

Mrs Boon-van der Starp is the founder of Madurodam. She was a member of the board of the Dutch Students’ Sanatorium. In the sanatorium, students with tuberculosis could recover and study at the same time. Mrs Boon-van der Starp was looking for a way to collect money for the sanatorium and came up with the miniature city. In the years following the Second World War, this was a matter of national importance: The Netherlands was being rebuilt and Madurodam was building with it. The park offered a place for the shared history of the battered Netherlands as well as hope for the future.

Bertha (Bep) Boon-van der Starp (Maassluis, January 31, 1884 – The Hague, October 9, 1959) was a Dutch resistance fighter, the founder of the Hague branch of the Committee for Jewish Refugees, the creator of Madurodam and the chairwoman of the Assistance Board of the Dutch Student Sanatorium (NSS).

The miniature city of Madurodam is named after him, as well as the Maduroplein area in Scheveningen.

There are model buildings and trains from the Netherlands NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen) on O Gauge Track with overhead Electrification. There are model railways in O Gauge and also trucks using the Faller system. The model boats abound with the unmarked Stena Line ferries.

There are KLM and Korean Air planes at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.

There is the Flying Dutchman plane KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij N.V.).

Madurodam is served by by HTM Tram Lijn 9. HTM Personenvervoer NV (HTM, Haagsche Tramweg Maatschappij) runs the trams and buses around The Hague/Den Haag.
