The Northern United States will generally see mild summers and harsh winters. Cool season grasses are those that are better suited for the north’s climate, growing well in cooler temperatures. These grasses might have a high tolerance for the cold, but they tend to turn brown during summer months, so they usually require extra watering and care during warm months.

Cool season grasses are generally attributed to the upper third of the contiguous United States. There is also what we call a transition area that sees climates that are not as cool as Northern states, but also not as hot as Southern states. This transition area can see both cool and warm season grasses. So if you’re in a transition area, your lawn can benefit from both warm and cool season lawn maintenance.

The most common cool season grasses are Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, and fine fescue.
Cool season grasses are usually dividing into two broad categories: ones that need a lot of direct sunlight, and ones that can handle a lot of shade and are okay to plant under dense tree cover.
