Body swap films typically involve a person’s consciousness inhabiting another body (often involving a female to male body swap, male to female body swap or an age-related body swap). However, though the popular films of the body swap film subgenre include comedies such as Freaky Friday (1976), Big (1988) and 13 Going on 30 (2004), there has been a recent shift in the subgenre that features more horror-themed instances of trading a body (and soul) with another person. Freaky (2020), It’s What’s Inside (2024) and The Substance (2024) are just a few of these recent films that have explored the darker side of wishing you were younger or living the life of someone else.

Also to note, though there aren't yet enough horror-themed body swap films to comprise a proper Top 10 list, we have expanded the criteria for this video to also include shapeshifter films, body horror films and demonic possession films that utilize themes and films tropes of swapping bodies.

In this video, we look at some of the best body swap horror films including a recent horror comedy about an Asian teenager who wants to be Caucasian (to disastrous effect), a recent film about multiple young adults who all swap bodies and slowly turn against one another and another recent Lovecraftian horror film that involves swapping bodies and is reminiscent of some great 80s cosmic horror films including Re-animator (1985) and From Beyond (1986).
