🌴 Where is Bunaken?

Bunaken is a small island located just off the coast of Manado in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is part of the Bunaken National Marine Park, established in 1991 and known as Indonesia’s first official marine protected area.

🚗 How to Get to Bunaken:

• ✈️ Fly to Manado (Sam Ratulangi Airport) from Jakarta, Bali, or Makassar
• 🚘 Take a 30-minute taxi/van ride to the Manado harbor or mangrove jetty
• 🚤 Board a 30–45 min boat ride to Bunaken Island

🤿 Diving in Bunaken – What to Expect:

• Massive green sea turtles everywhere (we easily saw 10+ on a single dive!)
• Schools of fusiliers, snappers, damsel fish, and butterfly fish
• Occasional reef sharks, barracuda, and eagle rays
• Great macro life: nudibranchs, leaf scorpionfish, and ghost pipefish if you look closely
• Healthy, colorful soft and hard corals along deep walls and shallow reefs

🌤️ Best Time to Dive Bunaken:

• 🗓️ March to October – Dry season with best conditions
• 🌊 Water Temp: 27–30°C year-round
• 👁️‍🗨️ Visibility: 15–30m
• 🌊 Currents: Mild to moderate; some drift dives possible

Whether you’re a newly certified diver or an experienced underwater explorer, Bunaken caters to all levels. It’s beginner-friendly with calm entry points and warm water, but also keeps advanced divers engaged with deeper walls and biodiversity.

• Carry reef-safe sunscreen – Bunaken is a protected area
• Bring cash (IDR) – there are no ATMs on the island
