Welcome to Day 58 🎹✨
Day 57 was… a production.
First, I committed the cardinal sin of live streaming: I updated software and firmware right before going live. I know. I KNOW. Somewhere, a streamer’s handbook burst into flames.
Everything was set. Everything was tested. Then the update made me reboot, and when the Mac came back, it brought a few gremlins with it. I thought I was good when I hit “Go Live”… but the iPad mirroring app (the one that lets me show the iPad screen on the stream) quietly crashed during the session.
And here’s where I confess my sins: I wasn’t paying any attention to chat. Bad me. 🙋♂️
I was so focused on getting my left and right hands to play nicely that I basically forgot I was hosting a live stream. So while chat is politely waving the red flags, I’m over here conducting “Piano Family Counseling, Session 57.”
Then my phone rings. It’s Val. And my first thought is: “Why is Val calling me DURING my live stream??” So I dismiss it. She calls again. I answer… and that’s when I realize she’s watching the stream and calling to tell me everything is broken. 😂
By the time we figured it out, we’d already been going over 20 minutes. We got things working again… and I immediately decided that was a great time to quit, because apparently today’s theme was “maximum effort, minimum results.”
Then I checked the app to see how much practice time it logged.
ZERO.
Not “a little.” Not “almost.” ZERO. Like the session never happened. Like the app looked at Day 57 and said, “Nope. Didn’t see it.”
Perfect way to kick off Week 9.
We have a saying in the live stream world: LIVE HAPPENS. And Day 57 was a shining, flashing neon example. All you can do is laugh… and try again tomorrow. 🎹🤣
--------Welcome back to the adventure. The 70-year-old guy (that would be me) decided to learn piano again after 20 years… and I’m doing it live, one practice session at a time.
Fair warning: I laugh at myself a lot during these sessions. Sometimes because I’m proud… and sometimes because my fingers are doing their own interpretive dance.
🎼 Here’s what I’m using for this journey:
ROLI Piano (49 keys!) + Airwave
And honestly… who wouldn’t love a keyboard that lights up like a rainbow? It’s ridiculous in the best way, and yes… it’s fantastic.
Airwave also tracks my hands on the keyboard and shows them in the app, which is equal parts helpful and “well, there’s nowhere to hide now.”
The Roli Learn app
It tracks my progress and hands out gold stars. With my luck, if I miss a day, it’ll sit me down for a “we need to talk” moment.
Ecamm (because of course Ecamm is involved)
Ecamm is the perfect program for streaming my practice sessions.

My practice sessions usually run 20–30 minutes. Expect a little progress, a little chaos, and the occasional “wait… what key is that?” Maestro may also make an appearance to supervise and silently judge.
Also, since I’m basically “playing out” on the internet, I did what any respectable street performer would do and put a tip jar on the piano. Subtle, right? 😄

If you’re watching live, feel free to ask questions. If you’re brand new to Roli, learning piano, or just curious how a 70-year-old ends up rearranging his whole workspace for a keyboard… you’re in the right place.
Let’s see where this goes.
One key. One click. One gold star at a time.
