Maha Shivaratri denotes the Great Night of Shiva and is considered as the most ideal night to offer prayers to Shiva.
Here are 7 important reasons highlighted in several Puranas behind the celebration of Maha Shivaratri.
1. Appearance of Shiva as Column of Fire
Once there was a fight amongst Vishnu and Brahma as to who is supreme among them. To put an end to their duel and make them realize that Shiva is the ultimate truth, Shiva appeared as a huge column of fire in front of them and challenged them to find the top and bottom of the column. While both were unable to do it, Brahma falsely claimed that he found the column’s top with the help of a Ketaki flower’s witness. His lie enraged Shiva who punished both Brahma and Ketaki flower not to be worshipped in temples. This event of Shiva appearing as column of fire happened on Maha Shivaratri.
2. Shiva Drinking Halahala During Samudra Manthan
When the milky ocean was churned by the Devas and Asuras for nectar, a deadly poison emerged from it. Shiva drank this venomous poison to save the universe, but did not swallow it, giving him he name, Neelakanta. This event is commemorated by celebrating Maha Shivaratri.
3. Divine Wedding Of Shiva & Parvati
Maha Shivaratri is believed to be the night Shiva and Parvati got married. Hence, it is a celebration of their wedding anniversary, mainly in North India.
4. The Night When Shiva Performed Tandava
It is believed that Shiva performed his cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and destruction called the Tandava on this night. Shiva devotees spend this night by reciting Shiva hymns or reading stories about him.
5. Shiva’s Promise to Parvati
Once, Parvati made Shiva promise that he would protect the earth from near destruction. Shiva promised on condition that people should worship him with great dedication and this day has been celebrated as Maha Shivaratri.
6. Maha Shivaratri in Kashmir
In Kashmir, Maha Shivaratri is celebrated as Hararatri, also called as Herath and Bhairavotsava. It is believed that Shiva took the form of a Jwala Linga or pillar of fire on this day.
7. The Hunter Story
This is an interesting story about a hunter explained by Bhishma when he was in deathbed. As it was night, he had taken shelter in a tree to escape from a lion. Fearing that he would doze off and fall from the tree, he began plucking leaves from the Bilva tree he was sitting on and unknowingly put them down on a Lingam under the tree. As he had offered leaves to the Lingam and kept vigil & fasting throughout the night, Shiva was pleased with him. This supposedly happened on Maha Shivaratri.
