Erella Hovers - Continuity and change in research about the Neanderthals in the Levant
Part of #NEANDERTHAL: The Conference which was organised by the Gibraltar National Museum from 13th to 15th September 2018 at the University of Gibraltar.
Research on the Neanderthals over the last two decades has effectively put to rest the view that members of this group were inferior to contemporaneous modern humans in any aspect of their existence. For historical reasons, this change was more dramatic for researchers working in Europe than for those working in the Levant, where Neanderthals were long believed to have reached the southern boundary of their distribution. In this paper I review behavioral aspects of Neanderthals in the Levant, such as hunting strategies, territorial behavior and social ecology, as they have emerged through a rich research record. I rely on the records of two late Levantine Middle Paleolithic sites – Amud Cave and the open-air site of ‘Ein Qashish – to illustrate some of the emerging views of the behavior of the Levantine Neanderthals. This review also highlights some more general questions and ideas about the dynamics of hominin social and demographic meta-populations and how they can be addressed in the archaeological record.
