During World War II, governments mobilized unprecedented financial resources. The United States emerged as the largest spender, committing about $341 billion (1945 USD) — more than any other nation, largely because of its global campaigns in Europe and the Pacific, plus massive Lend-Lease aid to allies.
Germany followed with around $270 billion, reflecting its long war on multiple fronts. The Soviet Union, despite suffering catastrophic losses, spent about $192 billion. China's spending, estimated at $183–190 billion, is controversial because of fragmented wartime economies and hyperinflation, but modern economic historians rank it high.
The United Kingdom expended about $120 billion, a massive share of its GDP, while Italy ($94 billion) and Japan ($56 billion) spent less but still strained their economies. Secondary powers like Canada ($15.6 billion), France ($15 billion), and Belgium ($3.25 billion) also mobilized significant sums relative to their size.
