The main advantage of MgO-doped periodically poled lithium niobate (MgO:PPLN) over undoped PPLN lies in its improved resistance to photorefractive damage, especially under high-intensity or short-wavelength operation.
Advantages of MgO:PPLN over PPLN:
Higher resistance to photorefractive damage:
Photorefractive effects can degrade performance in standard PPLN, especially under visible or near-IR light at higher intensities.
MgO doping (~5 mol%) significantly suppresses these effects, making MgO:PPLN more robust for high-power applications or continuous-wave (CW) SHG at shorter wavelengths (e.g. 775 nm).
Better thermal stability:
MgO:PPLN typically tolerates higher operational temperatures, which helps avoid damage and improves long-term reliability in temperature-tuned applications.
Improved transmission at shorter wavelengths:
MgO:PPLN transmits better in the visible and near-UV than undoped PPLN, making it more suitable for frequency-doubling into those ranges.
For low-power or telecom-band applications (e.g., SHG of 1550 nm with low power), standard PPLN can suffice, but MgO:PPLN offers better safety margins and durability.
