Film Facts---
All the post was done by Shaun James on and off over about a 6 month period, everything was modeled by Shaun James except for the cars and the tripod machines although he had to re-model the legs. He used 3ds Max and rendered with Mental Ray, some bits like the puddle, street lights and the porch light were modeled in Zbrush for a bit of extra detail, the distant environments were done in e-on Vue Esprit. The last shot with the Character on the step was shot outside on blue-screen and tracked with Boujou.
All the rendering took about a month to complete using a single i7 3930K slightly over-clocked and the final compositing was done with Discreet Combustion then edited with Premiere pro.
-----------------------------------------
We have always been huge fans of science fiction and especially H.G. Wells, whose books are extraordinary in every way; but in particular The War of the Worlds which we are sure you will agree has to be one of the most famous science fiction stories ever written. This sequence was primarily made for fun and was a welcome break from our other productions. We have produced two versions of this sequence, one in colour & the other in black and white.
The idea behind this black and white version was to pay homage to the classic science fiction movies like " The Day the Earth Stood Still " and " The Thing from Another World ".
The black & white is our preferred version so we are showing this one first; but the colour version will be uploaded soon and it is slightly different in a few places.
We have included numerous hat-tips to some of our favourite movies and TV shows within the sequence. Some are more obvious than others... can you spot them?
We hope you enjoyed the sequence and please feel free to comment below.
Please note we are not associated with any H.G. Wells Foundation or Publishers and we do not have any affiliation with Paramount or DreamWorks.
Here are some technical notes on the making of this sequence:
The inside shot was filmed on a Panasonic GH2 hacked; with one of driftwood"s lower bit-rate patches (I forget which one) and a Voigtlander 25mm.
The design of the room was inspired by the David Fincher and Leonardo DiCaprio Red One low light Mysterium-X sensor test.
I modelled and textured everything except for the cars and Tripod, the Tripod was free from www.TurboSquid.com there is a link at the end of the description. Everything was modelled and animated with 3D studio max with a few bits done inside of Zbrush, this was all rendered with Mental Ray and shaded with the Arch&Design shaders, also the distant hills were done with e-on`s Vue.
All the compositing was done with discreet combustion (I know really really old! But it still works great) and all the camera tracking was done with Boujou.
A big thank you to Kevin MacLeod, http://www.incompetech.com here are the tracks I used:
" Awkward Meeting, Decay, Digital Bark,Gathering Darkness, Long Note Two, The House of Leaves, Very Low Note, Heart of the Beast, The Dread"
