Copley South Australia

Описание: In September 2023 we were returning from the northernmost point of our SA road trip, Marree and stopped for 2 nights at the tiny , remote town of Copley some 120 km south . Like Marree it was along the Old Ghan Liine now closed for some decades. The line was notoriously unreliable being frequently washed out by floods. The route was persisted with as it allowed for reprovisioning of the steam trains from water sources along the way. With the advent of diesel locomotives the Ghan was rerouted further west into less flood prone regions. Like Marree Copley has an overgrown and decaying railway line and station. Sad echoes of a distant but hopefully not forgotten past.. Several km south of Copley is the virtual ghost town of Leigh Creek. It was meant to be a thriving community servicing the coal mine but this closed down in 2015. Many of the homes are empty but a supermarket, petrol station and some small businesses remain. I was blessed with some beautiful shots and videos from above Copley in the golden hours of sunrise and sunset. Leigh Creek can be seen in the distance along the Outback Hwy.
