President Frank-Walter Steinmeier of the Federal Republic of Germany, accompanied by Ms. Elke Büdenbender, arrived at the Maharlika in Villamor Air Base, Pasay City for a State Visit to the Philippines beginning June 15, 2026.

The visit marks a significant milestone in the long-standing diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Germany, spanning more than seven (7) decades. Germany remains the Philippines’ largest trading and investment partner among European Union (EU) Member States. The last visit by a German Head of State was in 1963, when President Heinrich Lübke made a visit.

Upon arrival, the German President was welcomed by Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Secretary Jose Francisco Benitez.

The state visit is expected to highlight strengthened cooperation between the Philippines and Germany across key areas, including defense, peacebuilding, maritime cooperation, trade and investment, climate change, renewable energy and people-to-people exchanges, underscoring both countries’ commitment to deepening bilateral ties and advancing mutual economic interests.
