Yog - I had clearly explained, Yog is not just a set of exercises. Asan and Pranayam are 2 limbs of 8 limbed Ashtang Yoga .
Yam Niyam are basic principles, disciplines of healthy and normal living.
Asan - all know about. Pranayam - starts getting into Mind along with body.
Further as we try moving towards Samadhi the last Ang/ limb - we start moving towards meditation, and this part of Yog, is definitely into spirituality.
Meditation - confusions and misconceptions
People want meditation to be like an anti depressant pill. It is an exercise that will help me lower my stress and my blood pressure etc. 🙂
Yes, these surely are some of the benefits (side effects) of meditation.
But what is meditation? (I believe I had explained this in one of the sessions, but I guess, need to repeat it)
Some people may say I want to do meditation, but let's not get into the spirituality stuff!
There are many ideas/ supposed techniques of mediation.
concentrate on something, some sound
State where I have no thoughts - a thoughtless state (One of the most popular idea about meditation)
Sit with eyes closed and chant some of your favorite god's name (Japa)
Imagine that some great power (god) is filling you in with peace, calm, energy
And many more.
Are all the above techniques useless? Of course not. They will help you and sooth your mind to some extent. But for example -Maybe even help in hypertension and other stress associated diseases. But ...
Would any of these change your fears/ (take extreme example - fear of death)? Would they change your response to some sudden loss? Definitely not!
With stresses, anxiety and fears, what kind of long term peace are you going to achieve?
Our goal of this course is to achieve better happiness and long term peace with self and surroundings. This involves better health, calmer mind, and a kind of stress free independent happiness/ joy, that you have not experienced before!
WHAT IS TRUE MEDITATION?
Word dhyan (ध्यान ) means focused knowledge process.
You could look at a picture/ a waterfall/ a rainbow or anything, you are doing dhyan of the subject.
What does a process of knowing involve?
1. There is a knower
2. There is an object of knowledge. (E.g. when you test sugar, sugar is the object being known)
3. There is knowledge of this object - and there is an experience that one gets.
So I look at gold - knower - myself. Object - gold. Experience: that of yellow glitter.
Smell a rose - Object - Rose. Experience - the fragrance.
In between the 2 knowledge objects, there is a very small fraction of time, where the object is of the 2. This period is a blank - no thought period.
Almost everything can be known.
Me myself, my pure self - can also be an object of experience. (This is getting a bit advanced as we have not covered this topic. But had to explain this to clarify meditation)
Now take the case -
What is to be known (subject/ object of knowledge) - Myself.
Who is knowing? - of course me, myself.
What is the knowledge? - of course myself.
And what is the Experience?: Of ultimate, true happiness/ bliss. (When you know sugar by testing it - you do it via your test senses, and the theperience is sweet test. The experience of self is without use of your senses - But this is way ahead of where we are in our course. Had to write this, to make people understand, that spirituality is a must for getting into Meditation.)
So when the focus of Dhyan . is on your pure self, and the knower, known and knowledge become same! This is the true meditation, or Samadhi as termed in Yoga
When we say we want to do mediation - want to focus on your true self, It is absolutely essential to find and understand the self, and things like who am i?
I hope this is clear now - that, you can't do real meditation without having clarity on spirituality. Any medication (meditation system), that goes like a procedure, without this clarity, is just a soothing/ calming exercise, with temporary relief.
What we are attempting is a much bigger, long term fix, a system level change ... So request participants to play along, be open. And of course feel free to challenge anything that does not appear convincing/ logical.
