Catherine Hepburn was born Katherine Hton Heepburn on May 12th, 1907 in Hartford, Connecticut into a progressive and intellectually vibrant family. Her father, Dr. Thomas Hepburn, was a prominent urologist and a staunch advocate for public health and venerial disease awareness.
Her mother, Katherine Martha Hton Heepburn, was a suffragist and a leading figure in the women's rights movement. Growing up in such an enlightened household deeply influenced Heepburn's sense of independence and social responsibility. Encouraged to think for herself and challenged traditional norms, she developed a strong will and an unshakable belief in individual freedom, qualities that would become hallmarks of her public and private life.
After attending Binmore College, where she graduated with a degree in history and philosophy in 1928, she turned her attention to acting. Her early foray into the theater were marked by both enthusiasm and struggle. She was fired from several roles for being too outspoken or too different. Yet, she remained undeterred. Her unique voice, angular beauty, and athletic presence stood in stark contrast to the demure and conventional actresses of her time.
