This project started as a simple DIY desk lamp — just some wires, a bit of wood, and an idea that wouldn’t leave me alone.
Turns out, it became one of the hardest builds I’ve ever done.
In this video, I take on a small woodworking and maker project using the Shaper Origin, hand tools, Planer, miter saw and a lot of patience. What began as a straightforward wood lamp build turned into a quiet lesson about persistence, imperfection, and why even the simplest projects can push us the hardest.
What you’ll see:
Building a modern wooden desk lamp
Combining woodworking and maker techniques
Honest reflections on creative struggle
Using the Shaper Origin for precision joinery
Why some builds teach more than they should
If you’ve ever found yourself deep in a project wondering why it’s fighting back — this one’s for you.
Time Stamps:
0:15 Wood selection. Black Walnut
0:30 Milling wood to working thickness
0:35 Cut parts with Shaper Origin
1:28 Dry Fit and Glue up with Titebond 3
3:08 Routing the Base and almost ruining the project
4:00 Glueing base to proper angle
7:10 Lamp shade build out
8:10 Full assembly
9:00. Wrap up
About Knocking on Wood
This channel is about more than woodworking. It’s about building things that build us back — through craft, patience, and a little bit of sawdust.
Every project is an experiment in making, reflection, and finding light in the process.
