The VOX Night Train 15 amp was humming in Thick mode and was time to test the tubes since it was bought used. The preamp tubes were working correctly. The output JJ EL84 tubes when tested were not well matched.
Using the Orange VT1000 tester, their matching numbers were two apart, which is typical of tubes that would hum in a push-pull output stage from previous testing. Purchased a new matched pair of JJ EL84's and installed them. Hum is very low with the replacements.
This is the amp in Thick mode where previously it hummed loudly. TIme for some fun with the John Birch J1 guitar and JB Magnum pickup directly into the amp.
