In Namhae, Gyeongsangnam-do, fishermen still use jukbangryeom, a 550-year-old bamboo trap method of anchovy fishing.
Bamboo fences are built in the tidal strait, guiding anchovies into nets with the natural force of the current.
Setting up requires months of labor—planting oak poles, weaving bamboo mats, and braving waves 10 meters above the sea.
The yield is small, less than 2% of Korea’s total anchovy catch, but the flavor is unmatched.
This is not fishing with greed, but with patience and respect for tradition.
