July 28th Special Meeting of the Elizabeth City Council to address initiative petition to restore the $20 rent control cap ordinance removed in 2022.
In June 2025, members of the Democratic Socialists of America circulated petitions under the name "Freelizabeth: Fair Rent and Enfranchise Elizabeth" to re-enact a strong rent control ordinance repealed in 2022 by landlord lobbyists.
In this video, see members of the Council vote to enact the proposal, after heated debate from public comment and a member even motions to table the petition altogether. Immigrant rights organizers also address the 30 years of ICE detention Elizabeth has suffered in facilitating with calls for law enforcement to end coordination with ICE in our communities.
The $20 limit, passed at this meeting, applies to buildings older than 30 years with 3 or more non-landlord units in the City of Elizabeth.
