Newark-on-Trent Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Описание: Located in the county of Nottinghamshire, and around 20 miles northeast of Nottingham, is the town of Newark-on-Trent, or commonly referred to as simply, Newark.

The origins of Newark-on-Trent are possibly Roman due to its location on the Fosse Way - a Roman Road linking Exeter to Lincoln. It also has the A1 road, which stretches from London to Edinburgh, running through the town. Additionally the East Coast Main Line from London to Edinburgh stops in Newark North Gate, one of two stations in the town.

From the 11th to 16th century Newark-on-Trent was under the control of the Bishops of Lincoln. In the 12th century Newark Castle was built, in accordance with a charter granted by Henry I which read as follows: "Henry, King of England to all the Barons and to the Sheriffs and to his ministers and faithful men of Nottinghamshire, Greeting. Know ye, that I have granted to Alexander, Bishop of Lincoln, that he may make a ditch and rampart of his fishpond of Niwerc upon the Fosseway and he may divert the Fosseway through the same town as he shall wish".

King John died at Newark Castle in 1216 following a banquet. It is rumoured that his cause of death was... eating too many peaches. No, really. The castle would later be partially destroyed by Parliamentarians after the Civil War in the 1640s, although some restoration work was carried out in the 19th century.

By the 16th century Newark-on-Trent was a prosperous industrial town, producing wool, hides, leather and cloth. Then in the 19th century, iron, sugar and brewing industries had also developed. All the while its bridge over the River Trent on the Great North Road made it a key point for passing trade. Then in 1846 Newark Castle station opened, linking it to Nottingham, with Newark North Gate Station on the other side of town opening five years later, in 1851, linking it to London, Edinburgh, and Lincolnshire.
