As happened last year during the floods in Valencia, hundreds, perhaps thousands, of cars were washed away in Spain over the past week.
Heavy rainfall has battered Spain over the past week, causing truly catastrophic flooding and severe economic damage to many regions of the country.
It all began in the province of Zaragoza, where a powerful downpour with hail fell, resulting in more than 41 liters of water per square meter. Torrential rains blocked and flooded hundreds of cars on the roads. Emergency services rescued passengers from stranded vehicles. The rains caused widespread flooding in several areas of Zaragoza, especially in the northern part. Tram service was interrupted due to a flooded underpass. The Zaragoza Fire Department responded to more than 130 storm-related calls.
Then, the remnants of Mediterranean Hurricane Gabrielle reached the east coast of Spain, bringing heavy rain. A red alert was issued in the autonomous community of Valencia. The streets of many coastal towns turned into raging torrents of water, washing away everything in their path and causing localized flooding.
In the neighboring autonomous community of Murcia, located south of Valencia, an orange alert was in effect. In the municipality of Molina de Segura, emergency services recorded more than 80 incidents involving flooded roads and cars. Several people were rescued from submerged cars.
Despite the heavy rainfall, there are no reports of casualties or serious damage yet. Authorities in both autonomous communities urged residents not to cross flooded streets and to follow civil defense instructions.
The week of heavy rainfall in Spain did not end there, with the next major flooding occurring on the famous resort island of Ibiza. Heavy rainfall in the Balearic Islands, which includes Ibiza, blocked roads and caused flooding in various parts of the island. A school in San Antonio was evacuated and closed.
Overnight rain flooded underpasses near the airport, forcing traffic to be rerouted via overpasses. According to airport management, by midday the water level had already exceeded 100 liters per square meter (104.5 l/min), causing serious leaks in much of the terminal. At the security checkpoint before entering the boarding area, persistent and severe water leaks were observed, completely flooding the area.
The downpour also caused significant damage to the Can Mises Hospital, where Building C was completely flooded.
While Spain suffered greatly from massive wildfires during the summer, autumn is characterized by tropical downpours and the resulting flooding.
