In Myanmar’s Ten Traditional Arts, sculpting (Panpu – the art of carving wood and ivory) is specifically recognized. It is also closely linked to other related arts, including:
• Pantain (bronze casting)
• Pantaut (stucco work)
• Pantamaut (stone carving)
These arts are regarded as branches of sculpting, as they all involve shaping and creating forms from strong, enduring materials such as metal, plaster, and stone.
A skilled sculptor must also have a solid foundation in painting. Painting cultivates an understanding of artistic expression, form, proportion, and composition. It also supports the ability to sketch designs and study surface details. For this reason, mastery of painting fundamentals is essential for anyone aspiring to become a great sculptor.
