Happy New Year to all 32 of you! 2026 is the year we blow this thing out of the water! I can't wait to show you the most epic places and wild stories from all over California. I look forward to re-growing this community and having every one of you join me along the way. Cheers to many more! 😎🥾
I was hiking the Claremont Loop Trail in the San Gabriel Mountains when a critter with dangling legs resembling a little black fairy flew right past my wife and I. I had no idea what I was looking at until I got home and looked it up.
I realized I had come across a Tarantula Hawk, a wasp known for having the most painful sting in North America and the 2nd most painful in the entire world. They're about the same size as a dragon fly, and can be found in the Southwestern US. I used AI to create scenes of what this wasp would look like on the same trail where I spotted it. I’ve also spotted one at San Antonio Falls. You can see that full waterfall hike on my channel.
Want to see a Tarantula Hawk for yourself? Head over to the Claremont Loop, a moderately difficult 5 mile hike consisting entirely of a sunny dirt road, and a little pavilion at the viewpoint. You might just get lucky.
