3. SOUNDBITE (English) Sadie Gurman, reporter, Associated Press
"Many of the witnesses are survivors of the shooting who watched their loved ones die and who, um, had to, um, who had to escape the theater themselves.''
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Sadie Gurman, reporter, Associated Press
"What really stood out to me, I felt, was actually seeing, um, the crime scene photos and listening to the detective testify about where he found the bodies in the movie theater because it was the first time that we've really seen photos of what happened in the theater and you just really wouldn't really expect to see this type of thing in a stadium style theater, giant movie theater complex. And, and he showed, you know, pictures of just people sort of sprawled out in between he aisles and on the stairs, ah, amid popcorn and ammunition.''

"The defense is trying to say, `We don't dispute what happened in the theater, ah, we want you to focus on his mental health'' and we haven't heard those witnesses yet. Those are expected to come in the next coming days and weeks. ''

"He rarely speaks to his attorneys. He doesn't move. He just occasionally glances at the clock. He doesn't look at the jurors. He doesn't turn around to see who's in the gallery. And he has shown no visible emotion. Even despite this graphic testimony that's been presented.''
STORYLINE:
Defense attorneys in the Colorado theater shooting trial are trying to keep jurors from knowing the worst details by objecting to emotional testimony and pictures with even small amounts of blood.
James Holmes' attorneys want to keep jurors focused on whether he was legally insane, not the nightmare of the attack.
Prosecutors have called dozens of witnesses, each with tragic stories.
Defense attorneys argue that survivors should not be allowed to testify about the long-term impacts of their injuries.
Experts say the defense will have a hard time tamping down the gory details.
Holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to killing 12 and injuring 70.
