Almost all American Duchess shoes come with leather soles that have been sealed with an acrylic top coat. This top coat will rub off with normal walking and abrasion on outdoor surfaces, and beneath is the raw leather of the soling. Rubbing on mink oil regularly will help the leather soles seal and last longer, protecting them from soaking up water, which can accelerate the breaking down of the structure of leather soling.
