This a review of the Sennheiser MKE 600 shotgun microphone, which is an XLR microphone that can also be used on top of a camera with a 3.5 mm adapter. And that’s the second reason I bought it. The first was to use it with my backup audio recorder which is the zoom f3 I reviewed separately.

In my research, I’ve found most people find the MKE 600 records
Audio so that a listener has a pleasant and easy to listen audio experience. Sibilance, off-axis sound, self-noise, and RF interference are essentially non-issues. The microphone performs well in all these aspects and does not pick up any unwanted noise or distortion.

I have not had a chance to try some of the competitors like Deity or Rode, but given I have some of their products already, I wanted to try something different. The features this microphone offered also made the choice a no-brainer for me.

The MKE 600 has a low-cut filter that can be turned on to reduce low-frequency noise such as rumble or wind.

The MKE 600 has a slot for a AA battery that can power the microphone for about 150 hours. It can also be powered by phantom power from an audio recorder or mixer. This alone is a great feature if you use it on your camera while on the move.

The MKE 600 comes with a shoe mount shock mount that has a quarter 20 tap on the bottom. It also comes with an XLR to 3.5 mm adapter that allows it to connect to a camera with a 3.5 mm microphone input and thus makes it suitable for both on-camera and off-camera use.

Because it’s a directional shotgun microphone, it works best when aimed at the sound source and close to it. Any sounds coming from other directions will sound colored and different than they would in real life. As you may know, this a characteristic of all directional microphones but some are more dramatic than others.

the build quality of the MKE 600 is fantastic and suggests that it will last for a long time. It’s manufactured in Germany and everything about it feels solid and durable. Just like the AVX wireless microphone series I used for several years.

In conclusion, the MKE 600 is a great option for anyone looking for an XLR microphone that can also work on top of a camera. it works well in either case but even better when boomed over the speaker. I would recommend this microphone to anyone who needs a versatile, convenient, and high-quality shotgun microphone.
