Mertech Marine is the global leader in sustainable recovery and recycling of end-of-life telecom cables from the ocean floor. Since its pioneering start in the early 2000s, the company has built a world-class blue economy business through entrepreneurial drive, innovation, and determination.
To date, Mertech Marine has recovered and recycled over 105,000 km (110,000 Mt) of submarine cable - enough to circle the Earth nearly three times. The company has processed nearly every type of telecom cable, including telegraph, coaxial, and fiber optic, avoiding more than 300,000 tons of CO₂e by replacing conventionally mined raw materials.
Mertech Marine operates globally, with a main recycling facility in South Africa, a remote site in Southeast Asia, and mobile units as needed. Its modular, scalable processing plants - currently at 19,000 Mt/year capacity - feature in-house developed technology that enhances efficiency in armoured cable recovery and depot clearance.
The company is fully vertically integrated, managing everything from cable acquisition and ocean recovery to logistics and recycling. This ensures strict quality control and adherence to international standards, including ISO 90001 and ISO 14001.
With three purpose-built vessels and a robust logistics network, Mertech Marine continues to lead the way in marine cable recovery. Partnering with manufacturers, it's advancing a circular economy model that considers the full lifecycle of submarine cables - from production to recycling.
This holistic approach sets a new benchmark for the industry and positions Mertech Marine to drive the next era of cleaner, more sustainable global connectivity.
