Can a few weeks of running translate to a Spring of crit racing? Coming off the back of a busy cyclo-cross season, I’ve spent more time in my running shoes than on the saddle since the end of January. Heading into the Salt Ayre 2/3/4 season opener, my expectations were low — I was honestly just hoping not to get dropped in the first 20 minutes!
Luckily, the Lancashire weather played ball: calm, cool, and dry.
The Race Breakdown:
The Break: After just 15 minutes, a strong move of three went clear. They stayed away to take the podium, with a couple more bridging part way across later.
The Strategy: With 6th place being the best available for the bunch, I knew my sprint wasn't quite there yet. I tried to play it tactically by being the first man through the final bend, hoping to surprise the group at least a tiny bit with a long sprint and a few bike lengths head start.
The Result: I underestimated just how long that finishing straight is! The legs gave out, I got swamped by the bunch, and crossed the line in 15th.
Overall, I’m pretty okay with the result. No "DNF" next to my name in early March, and plenty of room to build as the season progresses, I hope.
