This is a quick video demonstrating the function of a rotary hopper,
Rotary hoppers are used to deliver a controlled quantity of parts from a bulk storage hopper. Often they are used to top up a vibratory bowl feeder or other feeder, but can also be used to directly feed into a track or tube if the part geometry is suitable.
The major advantages of these sort of mechanisms are;
Easily scalable for part size and hopper volume
Jam resistant
Simple to manufacture
This particular unit is a single 3d printed drum with a helical track recessed on the inside. As the drum rotates, parts are carried up the side of the drum in the grooves - essentially this is an Archimedes screw being used for parts feeding. In this example a Nema17 stepper motor is used to drive the drum.
